                     Basic Rider Course 2 (BRC-2)
newThis new 9-hour course will be offered during the 2009 training season in Columbus, Delaware, Mansfield and Chillicothe.  It is designed for those over 18 years of age who have been riding with a temporary permit for longer than one year (over 1000 miles of experience ) and for experienced riders returning to riding with or without a motorcycle endorsement after several years of not riding.

The cost of the course is $25.00 and is non-refundable unless canceled by the Wednesday before you are scheduled to take the course. To take the BRC-2 course, you must have either a valid temporary permit (passed the written test) or have a motorcycle endorsement .

Students will need to provide the following protective equipment: over-the-ankle footwear, long pants (without any holes), long-sleeved shirt or jacket, full-fingered gloves and eye protection. Please also bring a DOT-approved helmet. If you do not have one, Motorcycle Ohio will provide one for you.


Classroom Instruction (3 hours) covers:
  • Risk Management & Preparation
  • Street Strategies
  • Riding Straight (Sober)

Range Activities (6 hours):
Following classroom instruction, students will be required to demonstrate sufficient skills in two basic control skill exercises to continue participation in the BRC-2.   

Students will go through familiarization with the training motorcycles, then must demonstrate sufficient skills in shifting (1st & 2nd gear) and stopping, and also must perform a control skills exercise (offset weaves, clutch control) to the satisfaction of the instructors. Students unable to demonstrate sufficient skills in the first two exercises will be counseled out of the course and advised to register in the Basic Rider Course.

No refunds will be provided if you cannot demonstrate basic control skills.

Students continuing in the course will then participate in on-cycle instruction in the following skill exercises:
  • Stopping Quickly
  • Limited-Space Maneuvers
  • Negotiating Curves
  • Stopping Quickly in a Curve
  • Multiple Curves
  • Avoiding Hazards

Students will then take a skills test. Upon successful completion of the test, the student will be given a Motorcycle Ohio BRC course completion card recognized by the State of Ohio for the BMV skill test waiver for a motorcycle endorsement.

** Permission to use a personally-owned motorcycle or scooter may be granted by the Coordinator for Motorcycle Ohio under certain circumstances. Students who wish to use their own motorcycle must submit the following to Motorcycle Ohio:

  • Letter requesting permission from the MO office stating reason for using your two-wheeled motorcycle/scooter in the MO class (Example: modification for handicap use).
  • State the motorcycle/scooter engine size (no more than 500cc and a minimum of 100cc).
  • Name of insurance company that has the motorcycle/scooter insured.

On the day of range activities, after state approval has been given, the student must show proof of insurance to the instructor and have the motorcycle/scooter safety checked for roadworthiness.
