Become
an Instructor Have you ever felt that you would
like the opportunity
to help people enjoy a sport that you have found to be rewarding? Maybe
you are looking for a little additional income doing something you enjoy
with people that share your interests in motorcycling.
No matter your reason for wanting
to become an instructor, the Motorcycle Ohio program is looking for individuals
with the dedication, experience and people skills to help teach the Motorcycle
Ohio Rider Education courses.
A good driving record -- This is a safety course and your driving record
reflects your attitude of safety first.
Considerable riding experience -- Instructors must ride well enough to correctly
demonstrate the correct riding skills to students.
Good communication skills -- the ability to communicate effectively with
individuals and groups of people.
Pass the Instructor Preparation Course.
The Instructor Preparation
Course (IPC)
The IPC is a 55-hour course. Each IPC generally takes six days to
complete: Saturdays 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and/or
Sundays 8 a.m. to 6 pm. Student
teaching will be scheduled, with all student teaching completed within two
months of the start date of the IPC.
The
instructional portion of the IPC will consist of approximately 40 hours
of time split between classroom and range. The purpose of this portion
of the IPC is to teach the Instructor candidates how to teach the BRC
to novice students. Besides the BRC curriculum, other topics will include
background and organizational information, classroom teaching techniques,
range coaching techniques and range management.
Instructor
Preparation Course Registration Fee
The course registration costs $100, which is nonrefundable.
All IC's must be registered for the IPC with fees paid no later than two
weeks prior to the start of the IPC course.
Any course with less than six candidates registered by the cut-off date will
be canceled.
All materials are provided to the
instructor candidate by the Department of Public Safety, and these remain
the property of the department until the instructor candidate successfully
completes the course.
The Following Items are Required to Participate in the IPC:
Over-the-ankle sturdy footwear
Full-finger gloves
Long-sleeved shirt or jacket
Long pants without holes -- preferably jeans
DOT-approved helmet
Eye protection if using an open-face helmet or a full-face helmet with

Pre-course
Requirements:
You must have taken the BRC within a 24-month period preceding your enrollment in the IPC. If you have not taken the BRC within this time frame, it is your responsibility to enroll in a BRC and complete that course before beginning the IPC. Please note that no other course such as the Experienced Rider Course (ERC) will meet this requirement. This requirement is to ensure that
the Instructor Candidate (IC) has a working knowledge of the course structure,
is familiar with the curriculum, and can perform all of the riding exercises.
Complete a home study assignment prior to the start date of the IPC. This
assignment will take the average candidate approximately four hours to
complete. The purpose of this home study assignment is to thoroughly familiarize
the candidate with all written materials.
Requirements
to Pass the IPC:
100% attendance in both classroom and riding sessions
Pass a riding skill evaluation
Attend the entire BRC student teaching course
Pass the student teaching evaluation
